Pearl waved shyly over to her Uncle Alex Grey, who walked over to her without emotion on his aged face. She winced as she recalled the reason why she had gone to live with an uncle she barely knew.
"Hey," she muttered.
"Good morning, Pearl. I see you have had a good journey. Your bags are waiting for you in your room. Follow me, if you please," he replied with no emotion.
She shivered violently as his stoic face turned away from her. It wasn't just the harsh features, slick blonde hair and unsmiling mouth, but mostly the scarily blue eyes which seemed to be absolutely iced over. It was unnerving.
She followed him up the long stairs into the mansion. Her thoughts wondered to the last time she had been there. Pearl had been 5 years old and her parents had decided it would be a good idea to visit her dad's (much older) brother. Her uncle had scared her as much then as he had now - but then she had clung to her mother's leg crying. Now, though, that was absolutely impossible.
"Welcome to The Grey Mansion, Pearl. I just want you to know that I would like to be called Sir Alex or Mister Alex. None of that 'uncle' in my house. Let's go," Uncle Alex said, smiling an unusual smile.
"Thank you and, um, okay... Sir Alex," Pearl replied, biting her lip.
"That is the kitchen to the right, and the living room is right through here. The table over here is where we eat. Now, through here please," Sir Alex said, and continued quickly.
Pearl stayed behind a few more seconds to enjoy the beautiful wooden paneling, high-quality wood and soft fabric on the chairs. Eventually she had to hurry to keep up with him.
She followed the (still walking) man through another arch on the right of the living room.
"Your room is up these stairs. I will leave you now, but you are expected in the living room tomorrow morning at 11:30 precisely. Good night, Pearl," Sir Alex said, and walked briskly away.
She walked up the stairs thinking about how strange it was that her uncle would want her in bed by 6 o'clock. Oh well, she thought, some people are just weird...
She arrived at the top of the stairs and marveled at the difference of colour and basic feel of the room in contrast to the living room and dining room. The blue and white were a delicious freshness and (to be honest) Pearl couldn't wait to get to sleep under the blue duvet.
Firstly, she brushed her teeth and brushed her hair. After changing into her pajamas, Pearl pushed the drawer closed and strolled over to the bed.
She turned the lights off and Pearl relaxed into the soft mattress.
The next morning Pearl woke up because of the sun shining warm through the windows onto her freckled face. Pearl stepped into the shower and, after a good wash, combed her hair and changed into a new pair of clothes.
The girl walked down the stairs in her new attire and got ready to make herself breakfast because she was pretty sure that Sir Alex wouldn't (or couldn't) make breakfast.
After just 10 minutes of splendid cooking, Pearl sat down at the table and took her first spoonful of a hot, homemade waffle.
Pearl jumped and nearly choked when she heard Sir Alex's voice behind her.
"I switched the time to 9:30 which is right about now so if you please, I'd appreciate it if you came with me to meet somebody," he said.
"Sure," Pearl muttered, gulping down another bite and then standing up to follow Sir Alex.
Pearl followed him through into the living room where a surprise was waiting for her...
To be continued...
