In this chapter of Blaming Innocence, Gemma finds a friend, but her enemies are getting worse by the hour.
It was dinner after the embarrassing get-to-know session. I watched from a small distance as the others talked and pulled faces at eachother. Even Mrs. Days laughed at the face Cinnamon made!
She crossed her eyes and pursed her lips.
"Guess what?" she giggled, crossing her eyes further. "I look like that stupid scholarship girl, Gemima!"
Of course, everyone laughed at her, except for me. Instead, I walked into the kitchen to put away my half-eaten plate.
As I started washing up, someone came up behind me. Out of the corner out of my eye I saw it was the blonde, shy guy, Chester.
"Hey," he said.
I spun around to face him.
"What?" I snapped. After everyone had been so mean to me before, I'd gathered that he was only here to annoy me or... or something of the sort.
Chester laughed at my expression.
"I'm just here to apologize for... for those guys out there," he said, jerking his thumb towards the door.
"Why do I have to believe that?" I snapped.
He leaned towards me, a sad expression crossing his face.
"Look, I'm just trying to be nice to you. They all think they're all that, but really they just rely on their own looks and money to do the talking. They don't like you because you're so clever, and I mean that in a good way, and you got in by scholarship and they didn't. They're jealous, and they're taking it out on you, that's all I'm trying to say," Chester explained.
"I... I'm sorry," I mumbled, embarrassed. "I'm just a bit on edge because of them laughing at me earlier."
Chester chuckled. "Well, um, I gotta go, but it's nice meeting you... Gemma."
"Nice to meet you too," I replied, smiling.
It seemed I had finally made a friend.

"So... you made a friend. What about after that?" Inspector Shaw said, smiling gently.
"Well... I suppose something did happen after that," I muttered, biting my lip.
I sighed and continued...
