Lost and Found - Chapter 6

The day moved awfully slowly for the girls, but finally it was 4 o'clock and the bell rang for the end of school.

Charity and Juliet sat down on the bench outside the school walls and started talking.
"So we go to your house," Charity stated, "and ask your mum if I am actually your sister?"
"That's right! And then we make friendship bracelets!" Juliet exclaimed, excited.
"Why would we make friendship bracelets?" Charity enquired, laughing silently to herself at the childishness of Juliet.
"Because we've been separated for 17 years... Oh, isn't this romantic? I never thought I'd have a sister - and certainly not a twin!"
"I didn't either... And it actually seems more like a story than real life to me..." Charity replied, biting her lip.
"But it is real life! Now let's go ask my - our - mum," Juliet laughed.

When they came to stand in front of the house, Juliet dropped her head and sighed. She had been excited and confident just a moment before, but now she wasn't so sure. She had no clue what her mother was going to say and if she'd like what she heard.

"I'm sure it'll be okay," Charity comforted.

Once they were all seated comfortably on the living couch, River started telling the story of what had happened when they were children.
"Your father and I..." she started.

When the story ended Juliet looked away with sadness and confusion in her heart. She had grown up thinking that Simon was her father - and now in one day she had found out that she wasn't his daughter. She felt angry at her mother for never telling her.

"Well... I'd better go then... I'd like to talk to my dad about this," Charity said as she stood up. She fiddled with her fingers before saying, "Thanks... for everything."
"No problem," River replied, "Now am I going to get a hug or not?

"Sure," Charity said, and chuckled. "Bye."
"Yes, goodbye. And don't hesitate to come by anytime you want to," River said.
"I won't... hesitate I mean. I'll come by sometime," Charity said, and with that she left.

Juliet scowled at her mother after she had waved goodbye to Charity.
"How come you never told me?" she hissed at her.
"How could I? I never had the time or the opportunity to," River said. "I'm so sorry, Jules."
"Don't call me that!" Juliet yelled, and ran into her room.

The door slammed as Juliet ran into her room, tears of anger and hurt streaming down her face. River looked away and mentally kicked herself for not telling her daughter sooner. Now she was stuck with an angry Juliet, which was never a good thing.

"Hey dad," Charity started later that evening as they were having soup for dinner. "Who's my mum?"
Kyle coughed as he took in the unexpected question.
"Who's my mum?" Charity repeated, louder.
"Honey... could we talk about this later?" Kyle said, biting his lip.
"No, I want to talk about this now," Charity said.

Kyle stood up and walked to his computer.
"You'll clean those, won't you?" he said, avoiding the question entirely.
Anger bubbled up in Charity.

"You!" she screamed, stopping him in his tracks. "You lied to me! For 17 years you lied to me! I know who my mother is! Her name is River and I have a sister called Juliet! You raised me and let me think I didn't have a mother. You made me think she abandoned me - US! But you abondoned her! I know she cheated on you - but how could you! You lied to me!" and then, softer, dropping her arms to her sides and letting the tears fall freely.

   "You lied to me..."

Charity slept uneasily that night. Her mind was racing and it was 2:30 when she finally fell into an uneasy sleep.

Juliet ate late that night. She had fallen to sleep with tears on her cheeks and woken up at 10:00. She had walked into the kitchen and ate some leftover Mac 'n Cheese. After eating, her mother and father had sat down next to her. They had a serious expression on their faces and when she saw her mother's bloodshot eyes she knew that something was wrong - terribly wrong.

"Juliet..." her father started. "We - I - have some news for you. I..."

"I have cancer."
