Lost and Found - Chapter 7

Charity closed her dresser as she finished putting on her school uniform. It was the second day of school and already it felt as though she had gone there for years. It was early but Charity didn't mind - she had slept badly and was sure that she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep now.

She went throught the normal morning routine, making her bed...

 ...brushing her teeth...

...and preparing breakfast. All the while the events of the previous day swept over her mind like a tidal wive - drowning out everything and making itself very well known.

Breakfast was a quiet, solemn event. Neither father nor daughter wanted to start talking about what had happened and so the unspoken words hung like black smoke in the air between them.

"Bye dad," Charity mumbled as she stood up from the table and brought her plate to the sink.
When she was out of the door, Kyle scowled angrily at his plate. He didn't know what to say or feel and eventually decided that it would be best to just stay late at work so that he wouldn't have to face his daughter that evening. And although his mind was screaming Coward! at him, he stuck to his decision like glue.

"Hi!" Charity exclaimed excitedly as she saw her sister in the school parking lot.
"Hey..." Juliet mumbled, and ran a hand through her hair. "I have something to say to you."
Charity's face fell as she thought that her sister was going to say she couldn't hang out with 'that stupid scholarship girl' anymore.
"My dad's - the one that raised me - got cancer and I have no clue who to tell about it," Juliet said, as tears started to gather in her eyes.

"Oh my god!" Charity exclaimed, and took her sister in her arms. "I'm so sorry!"

"Hey!" the blonde guy Charity hadn't recognised the day before said, interrupting the volley of comforting words that Charity was giving Juliet. "I'm Asher... remember me?"
"Asher?" Charity said, testing the name on her tongue. "Asher who?"
"Asher Deen. You know, from nursery?"
"The one that used to wipe his boogers on my hair?" Charity said, laughing.
Asher blushed. "Yeah, huh, that one."
  "Don't worry, you're forgiven."
"Hey guys, I'm just going to go over to Perpetua," Juliet said, excusing herself.

"Hey guys," Juliet greeted. "What's going on?"
"I was just telling Trashy Bluebird here that her shoes looked ridiculous," Perpetua sneered.
"Well," Juliet laughed, "I can't disagree."
Juliet detested the ugly silver-haired snob, but she knew that if she took the side of Suzie Jeffers, or 'Trashy Bluebird', she could be bullied for life.

Suzie looked away with tears in her eyes. She had coloured her normally mousy brown hair blue a year ago because all her friends at the normal Riverview school had done it. Just a month after, her father had given her the news she would be going to the Phillipe Trez College. She hadn't come out of her room for the entire weekend because she had been so furious. This was what her act of colouring her hair had done. Delivered her the name Trashy Bluebird.
"I... I gotta go," she mumbled through a choked throat.

She ran down the school lane, tears streaming down her cheeks.

She went into the bathroom and stared out of the window, her blue hair streaming out down her back. Little did she know someone was standing behind her.

A red-haired girl who looked suspiciously like the one that had helped Perpetua bully her, stood infront of her.
"Hey... I saw what those guys did to you. Bad luck, eh? I'm Charity Paystone, by the why, and I actually like your hair," she said.
"What?" Suzie said, aghast. No one had ever said that they liked her hair before. And here was this perfectly strange girl telling her she liked her hair?
"Just... Well, I told you," Charity said, confused.

Suzie, overjoyed that she had found someone that liked her, threw her arms around Charity and hugged her.
"Thank you so much," she whispered.
Just then, the bell went for their first class.

Ms. Havens sat at her brown desk and regarded the new amount of pupils she had. They all seemed quite different except for two red-headed girls who were, obviously, twins. Just as she was about to begin the lesson, the door opened to reveal the headmaster.

He stood infront of the doorway, looking stern, like he always did. Mr. Yung stalked forward to the front of the classroom.

"Ms. Havens," he began quietly. "I have just recieved some news regarding Juliet Suns and I would like you to excuse her from your lesson, if you please."
"Yes, Mr. Yung, of course," Ms. Havens replied.

 She stared sorrowfully at the young girl who was sitting near the front of the classroom. She had heard this morning in the staffroom that her father had gotten cancer, and she was nearly certain this 'news' had something to do with Juliet's father. She said a silent prayer for the girl and then said to her;
"Juliet, dear, would you go with Mr. Yung, please?"

Juliet got up and took a step towards to front of the class. She didn't, not for anything, want to meet the nervous, worrying looks of her class mates, expecially her sister.
"Follow me please, ms. Suns," Mr. Yung said.

A few minutes later she was seated in one of the fancy overstuffed chairs in the headmaster's office.
"Ms. Suns, I have some news regarding your father. He... he was taken into the hospital because he had had a dramatic heart attack this morning just after you left," Mr. Yung said and then looked away with sadness in his eyes.
"What's wrong?" Juliet whispered, though she didn't want to know.
"Your father, Juliet, won't be coming back... ever."
